Shawn Spencer (James Roday) hails from a family of cops, and was fully expected to carry the torch by his father, Henry, who meticulously schooled his son from a very young age in the finer points of detective work. But while Henry made him a detective, he can’t make Shawn be a detective.

It soon becomes clear that Shawn’s extraordinary powers of observation and deduction are still no match for his overdeveloped sense of fun, as he takes a string of random jobs strictly for enjoyment and entertains himself calling in tips to the police hotline for crimes he sees on television.

And then one night, one of Shawn’s tips lead police somewhere he never imagined — back to him. It seems detectives believe information this accurate could only have come from the inside, and Shawn is the suspect.

Desperate to avoid jail time, Shawn hastily explains that his insight is really second sight – he’s a psychic. And though skeptical, the department is impressed and Shawn is hired on as a “psychic consultant”.

Immediately enlisting the assistance of his reluctant best friend, Gus, Shawn opens his own agency, PSYCH, taking his talent for detective work — and fun — in a new direction.

The best architects and planners were commissioned to design a welcoming place for these superlative geniuses to reside, an area that would offer the best education for their children, the best healthcare, the best amenities and quality of life. A community was created to rival the most idyllic of America’s small towns — with one major difference: this town would never appear on any maps. At least, none that haven’t been classified “eyes only” by the Pentagon.

Thus, the town of Eureka was born. But for all its familiar, small-town trappings, things in this secret hamlet are anything but ordinary. The stereotype of the absent-minded professor exists for a reason, and most of the quantum leaps in science and technology during the past 50 years were produced by Eureka’s elite researchers. Unfortunately, scientific exploration is rarely what one expects, and years of experiments gone awry have yielded some peculiar by-products.

From unrequited love to professional jealousy, from addiction to depression, the problems of Eureka’s townsfolk stem from life’s myriad of everyday challenges. But with the population’s unique talents, troubled psyches and limitless resources, these small-town concerns have a way of becoming big-time problems. Three-part crime thriller, courtesy of BBC One. The series is called Sherlock, it stars actor Benedict Cumberbatch, and it was concocted by Gatiss and writer friend Steven Moffat, the man who now calls the shots on Doctor Who (for which Gatiss has also written episodes).

The accoutrements look familiar – there’s the violin, a knife stabbed through a pile of post and the general untidiness – there’s something different about this flat. A laptop on the dresser gives the game away. Good deduction: it’s set in the present.

“Bringing it out of the fog,” is how Gatiss describes the idea behind the series, which sees Holmes and his sidekick Watson (The Office’s Martin Freeman) on the trail of serial killers and crime kingpins in 21st-century London.

Sherlock is a British television series produced by Hartswood Films for BBC Wales, co-produced with Masterpiece. It was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who wrote one episode each. Paul McGuigan(Lucky Number Slevin) directed the first and third episodes; Euros Lyn directed the second, which was written by Stephen Thompson.
